Ignazio Fresu offers us a
rather imposing installation
entitled “False Gates”. In this
work the union between painting
and sculpture gives rise to
architecture: namely, the gates
whose geometric rigour and
essentiality are strikingly
expressive.
In Fresu we have become
accustomed to an unusual form of
artistic expression which
experiments with and exploits
different materials to create a
result which is open to any
number of interpretations.
Firstly, let us analyse the
materials used by the artist:
off-cuts and leftovers from
manufacturing processes and
consumer activity which include
metals, pipes and polystyrene.
He has greatly exploited the
latter by executing fine
carvings on the pieces.
Polystyrene has come to
represent our consumer society.
It is used and then has to be
got rid of. Its utility is
ephemeral but it is extremely
long lasting. It retains the
imprints and the shapes of the
objects which it has held and
enclosed. Polystyrene is the
matrix of our times.
The raw materials used by
Fresu are colour-enriched
through processes which are the
result of alchemy involving
minerals or metals: oxides which
have been created either by the
artist or by the passing of
time. The pigments then continue
to mutate over time through
oxidation, in a fading effect
which is evocatively beautiful.
The “False Gates” are light
in colour but within them we
find traces of dark sand, rich
in haematite, found on the
island of Elba. Once again,
Fresu has turned back to the
past to recuperate Etruscan art
and make it modern.
It is a fascinating journey
which takes us almost down into
Hades in order to rediscover a
new spirituality. The “false
gate” is, in fact, a symbol
which has been mutated since
antiquity. Fresu explains to us
that it is a gateway whose
threshold cannot be crossed by
the living but through which
man’s life force can pass,
thereby creating a link between
life on earth and the afterlife.
Through this installation the
artist gives us the impression
that he wishes to measure
himself against time and its
evolvement. And the False Gates
become the expression of a
dichotomy which is ever present
in Fresu’s work. They
encapsulate both the real world
and the spiritual world.
In the context of our
consumer-driven world, which
seems to absorb and condition
all life forces, here we find
the message that lies behind
these “false gates”, behind this
architecture created out of the
leftovers of consumerism, gates
which close but which, at the
same time offer both a way out
and the glimmer of something
beyond the present.
Let us therefore admire this
work. Let us admire the shiny
mixture of sand and minerals
that irradiate light. These
“False Gates” create a whole
host of openings which send our
glance shooting towards the
light or offer us new ways of
access and take our eyes towards
new horizons.

Periodo: 21 luglio – 4 agosto
2007
Giunto alla 4° edizione quest’anno
Spazi Evasi si presenta come un
villaggio culturale che prende
vita nel centro di Francavilla
al mare, all’interno del Palazzo
Sirena e nell’area esterna
circostante. La manifestazione,
che si svolgerà dal 21 luglio al
4 agosto 2007, è ideata dall’
Associazione Culturale La.Li.Pè.,
in collaborazione con il Comune
di Francavilla al mare, la
Provincia di Chieti, la Regione
Abruzzo, Cosvega multiservizi e
Conai (Consorzio Nazionale
Imballaggi).
“Spazi Evasi 07– Stile
sostenibile”, come nelle
edizioni precedenti, si presenta
come un evento complesso in cui
ricerca artistica e scientifica,
spettacoli e musica si innestano
nel tessuto sociale e
architettonico della Città.
Quest’anno la manifestazione
entrerà nel mondo dello sviluppo
sostenibile, cercherà attraverso
l’arte e la cultura di stimolare
il fruitore ad uno stile di
vita alternativo, basato sulla
sensibilità verso alcuni
atteggiamenti innovatori come la
differenziazione e il riciclo
dei rifiuti e la possibilità di
sfruttare fonti energetiche
alternative.
Il villaggio culturale
ospiterà l’esposizione
interdisciplinare “Premio Spazi
Evasi Re-Use”, allestita
all’interno del Palazzo Sirena,
in cui arte, design e scienza
dialogheranno per dare una
visione completa e affascinante
degli ultimi risultati della
ricerca relativi alla tematica
dell’iniziativa. Le opere
esposte nella mostra sono state
selezionate attraverso un bando
europeo pubblicato sul sito
internet ufficiale
www.spazievasi.it e
artisti, architetti e designer
sono stati invitati a
presentare, progetti artistici
che si ispirino al tema “Re-Use”.
Il “Palazzo Sirena” diventerà un
grande salone espositivo e,
oltre ad ospitare la mostra
“Premio Spazi Evasi Re-Use”, al
suo interno verranno allestite
alcune mostre di artisti
nazionali ed europei.
Come negli anni passati tutto
l’evento sarà contornato da
spettacoli e concerti musicali.
L’obiettivo è quello di rendere
funzionale, riconoscibile e,
allo stesso tempo, suggestivo il
villaggio culturale,
attribuendogli una valenza
scenica in grado di coinvolgere
gli spettatori.
